Search engines were nothing new; the first one was Archie created back in 1990, and there had been more than a few created between then & when Google launched (most notably Yahoo!) The proliferation of smartphones and tablets mean more and more consumers will be viewing your website on the much smaller screen of a mobile device. For a good user experience, make sure your website is mobile responsive, rendering correctly on a desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone. The shift to mobile devices has caused Google to change the methodology behind how it indexes and ranks websites. With your core keywords grouped into buckets based on exact local monthly search volume, you will most likely notice that the longer the search query, i.e. the more words in the phrase, generally the lower the search volume. Voice Search and Mobile-First Index might drastically change that, but we’re not there yet.
Rankings, On-page and Off Page SEO
Search engines optimize their results pages — especially their mobile search results pages — to display businesses that are located near the searcher. This is a good thing for local businesses because local online searches lead to visitors and purchases. You should include a sitemap on your website that holds an index of all your web pages. This way search engines can find all of your pages and index them easily. You should try to limit sitemaps to 50 links, so make sure the most important ones are in there. Some search engines reject sites with more than this number. You can find freeware to do this for you, or alternatively some of our web hosting packages include software to do this for you. If possible, secure your site’s connections with HTTPS. Encrypting interactions between the user and your website is a good practice for communication on the web. What Google wants to see is authoritative and relatable links talking about your site.
Optimize for people
The addition of internal links – links from your own domain – to your content can be very effective for SEO. It’s a strategic way to inform search engines about the topics you want to serve as an authority, Make sure your title tag is 50-60 characters long, including spaces. Anything longer and Google may cut you short. Google estimates that around 56% of mobile searches have local intent, and 50% of consumers who conduct local search on their phone visit a store on the same day. With local SEO you can showcase your business information directly to consumers who are actively looking for businesses like yours, and achieve an incredible reach throughout your local area. Good ways to boost readability include breaking up sub-topics within your content, using images and videos to help explain difficult concepts, and visually highlighting one or two quotable sound bites that illustrate key points.
Frequently Update Content/Blogs
Search engine spiders typically attempt to access your site a number of times each day. If they try to do so during a period when your hosting server is down, the attempt will of course fail. If this happens too often, your site will be flagged by the search engine as unreliable, which of course affects your ranking. When I am reading articles, therefore a potential consumer, I have no idea whether a link is follow or nofollow. Clearly, a huge majority of people will not have the slightest idea that such a distinction exists! If I am intrigued by what is written about your product or service, I will click. If I really like what I see on your site, I may buy. The type of link will not be in my thoughts. When it comes to marketing strategies for your small business, local SEO is the first avenue on that road. According to Gaz Hall, a UK SEO Consultant : "If you want to achieve a higher ranking on Google and other search engines, you’ll need to get serious about search engine optimization."
Mobile Search Continues to Rise
Historically, traffic from search engines has been about a very singular
pursuit -- that of rankings. Have you ever wondered why Google.com delivers different results for a user in the US than for a user in Germany? Similar to your title tags, meta descriptions are a simple, but highly effective way to improve your SEO. Meta descriptions are used to generate the small paragraph of text that appears below a page’s title in the search results. Organic search is a powerful channel for getting new customers, but SEO isn’t a one-time investment, and it won’t magically fix your marketing challenges.
